Apple officially supports people repairing their own iPhone for the first time.
With Self Service Repair, customers can purchase genuine Apple parts and tools and instructions for using them when they need to repair their phone.
With the new program, customers can repair, for example, broken monitors or cameras or replace expired batteries.
The new announcement comes amid growing pressure from the repair shop’s right to argue that making it difficult to repair your own equipment is unsustainable and unfair.
While Apple offers other ways to repair equipment and the option to replace old equipment for reuse or recycling, individual customers have so far not been officially supported if they want to make repairs themselves.
Customers are asked to make sure they are comfortable making their own repairs before receiving parts, and will be guided through documentation to ensure they understand the full complexity of any repair. If the work goes wrong, customers can take it to an official supplier for a professional, in which case they will have to pay for the repair.
The new Self Service Repair program runs alongside thousands of service providers, some of which are Apple-authorized and others operate as independent companies. In 2019, Apple released a new program that allows the latter to have full access to official parts and tools.
Apple says it still expects a visit to a professional repair provider to be the “safest and most reliable” approach for the “vast majority of customers.” The new service is for “individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic equipment,” he said, because it may require precise and potentially harmful work on very small and complex parts.
If a customer decides to perform their own repair, they will register online through a third-party service provider. They will then be sent the relevant parts and instructions to carry out the repair and will be asked to return the broken parts for recycling – at the final price for returning the parts.
Self Service Repair will initially be released in the United States for the iPhone 12 and 13. It will later come with Macs with M1 chips and will expand to other countries in 2022.
Apple has stated that it has been working on the repairability of these devices during the design process and that the latest phones are the most repairable devices it manufactures.
Initially, it offers 200 individual parts and tools available with the most common repairs – such as monitor, battery and camera – on the two latest iPhone lines. Apple said support for other types of repairs will come later this year.
“Creating better availability of genuine Apple parts will give our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
“Over the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service points that have access to Apple’s original parts, tools, and training, and now we’re offering an option for those who want to make their own repairs.”
The warranty rules remain unchanged. Repair or damage to the device will void the warranty, but such repair will not alter or limit the ability to perform other warranty repairs at a later date.
